"I'm interested in the notion of a small physiological function, such as a quiet breath, being able to manipulate something very large," Banes said. "In this case, the wall, a representation of the architecture of the gallery space."

By integrating the viewer as elemental to the function of the artwork, as well as allowing the artwork to interfere with the viewer's personal space, Banes highlights the reciprocal relationship between the art and the spectator.

Jamie Banes is merely a sample of the vast array of artistic talent that will be showcased in these galleries. There are seven other dynamic artists from very different areas of specialization who are graduating with MFA degrees this year. Those whose work will be showcased in the MU Gallery are Francisco Gonzalez, Mariah Hess and Gabriella Soraci. Work by Cynthia Yardley, Christian Lanier, Ashley Gierke and Richard Haley will be displayed alongside Banes' wall at the Nelson Gallery.

This collection of art marks the culmination of a momentous occasion in each of the artists' lives: the production of their thesis projects. The energy of this shared excitement and purpose will be enough to please any art enthusiast.
